British Values

At Carterhatch Infant School, the strong ethos we have, the positive relationships we have within our school community and the effective Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural education we provide for our children, ensures the promotion of British Values.

We actively seek to challenge and to change any behaviour, opinions or attitudes within our community which are contrary to the promotion of British Values.

As a school we are committed to promoting British Values in order to ensure that all our children ‘develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.’

The fundamental British Values are;

• democracy
• the rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and those without faith

Through Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural education, our children are encouraged to develop understanding of tolerance, liberty, democracy and respect through learning and experiencing;

• self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
• respect for themselves and others
• respect for and acceptance of the beliefs, faiths and cultures of themselves and other people
• appreciation of how abiding by rules is essential for well being and safety
• how to distinguish right from wrong and respecting the values we share
• responsibility for their own behaviour
• to show initiative
• respect for others and how they can contribute positively to the lives of others
• how they can be part of and influence decision making processes
• how to recognise prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour
• the importance of identifying and combating discrimination

• the role of public institutions and services in Britain

Just some of the ways in which we ensure this happens are through;

• Weekly circle group meetings in Year One and Two, where all children experience having a voice that is listened to, working collaboratively and cooperatively with others
• Personal, Health, Social, Citizenship and Emotional (PHSCE) education opportunities where all children are encouraged to develop positive attitudes, knowledge and skills which enable them to make relationships, recognise and manage their emotions, look after themselves, understand and respect themselves and others, achieve good physical and mental health and make a positive contribution to their school and community
• Religious Education curriculum and enrichment activities which offer all children opportunities to appreciate, explore and understand different faiths and beliefs
• the use of teaching materials, resources and experiences which actively promote British Values, different cultures and faiths and seek to challenge discriminatory or prejudicial views.
